The New Me

One thing that has changed me throughout the this first semester of college is my perspective on my academics. At BW I have gained a new appreciation for my school work. I have this realization that what I am doing really matters and I am building and creating my future. Its now more of an inner responsibility I have to please myself with my academics.  In high school I always wanted to get good grades and cared about my studies but I didn't do it for myself, I did it for getting in to college and my parents. I guess what spurred this is realizing I am here because I want to be here and I chose this path so I need to make the most of it and get everything I possibly can out of my experience. This has definitely been a positive change. I am growing as an adult and making a choice to get the most out of my education.

Another thing that has changed is that I have improved  my organizing skills. When I was at home I was very unorganized and kept my room messy. Now I can not focus in my dorm room when it is messy. My room must be clean and organized if I want to get any of my homework done. I also learned I can't do homework unless I am in my dorm room. I can't focus in the library or the lounge. What spurred this change is only having a small space and trying to work in a cluttered area. I think this is a positive change because I am now neat and organized.

My last change is my attitude toward home life. Before I left for school all I could think about is leaving and getting away. However, being away I realized how much I miss home. Every time I go home I am so thankful to see my family and friends. What spurred this change is going away to college and not being with my friends and family. This is an overall a positive but sometimes negative change. Mostly positive because I have grown to really appreciate everyone. It is also negative because I miss my family and friends while Im at school.

My Friends

Coming to Baldwin Wallace I knew very few people. There were only two students that went to my high school, who I was not close with. However it was nice to see familiar faces around campus. After orientation and weekend of welcome I met someone who I instantly became friends with. We are now super close and will be rooming next year together. Other than both orientation and WOW I met a lot of my close friends in my dorm. I met a lot of them through hanging out in the lounge and events my RA has set up like going to yoga as a floor. I think only a few friends has changed since the semester. I think that happens for a number of reasons. For example they drift and find their own new group, or the excitement of meeting a new friend dies down and you find out who they really are. I also have met new people and made new friends. As you do different activities and go to other events you meet new people. I feel like it has been really easy for me to make friends. I didn't really worry about making friends because I know it will happen and I can socialize easily. Overall I have made some really good friends so far!!

My Campus Event

I chose to use Global Friends Hour as my campus event! GFH is an organization that brings international and Baldwin Wallace students together to talk about international topics and culture. The meeting I went to had a guest speaker who talked about American politics and various topics relating to government. It was an open discussion the audience would raise their hands or just speak about how they felt about the issue. I enjoyed how it was a very open environment anyone could say anything and not be judged but challenged by new thoughts or ideas by others. It became sort of like a healthy debate amongst the group. I did not like how the speaker in my opinion took a clear political stand point and made his choice for president known. I thought it was disrespectful and one sided, I did not come to GFH to hear a speaker tell me about his feelings on the candidates. I showed me how diverse the BW community is. I felt like I was able to speak my mind and felt comfortable in the BW community. I would recommend this event to a friend. I would tell them to try it out and go to one meeting and see how they feel because it is very interesting and worth going to.

My student organization

The student organization I am involved in is Habitat for Humanity. Habitat is a non profit organization ran by volunteers of the community. Their mission is to build homes for under privileged families. I chose to be apart of this organization to not only make the community a better place but it also helps to make me a better person. I am able to be selfless and do something for someone else that will change their life. I attended a picnic/meeting to get to know all of the members and get a better understanding for their cause on the 15th of September around noon. I also attended a meeting on November 2nd at 9pm in Kamm. This meeting was about what events and build dates are coming up.. The organization is somewhat formal during meetings but there is informal gatherings to "bond."After attending both of these meetings I could tell this is something I am very interested in. What draws me to habitat is the sense of community and doing something for the greater good.

My Finances

Being a college student it has definitely changed my perspective on my finances. I no longer carry cash or my debit card with me I only use my jacket express. At this point in time I don't have a budget but I am very careful and I'm aware of how much I am spending daily. I only eat in the union once a day, either for lunch or dinner the rest of my meals I eat in my dorm with the food I have.

I think I have spent how much I planned on spending no more or less. The only unexpected costs are the vending machines that I sometimes use for a soda or candy bar occasionally. I spend the majority of my jacket on food in the union. I think I am using my jacket appropriate and I am spending just enough that I need to for food and items. I don't need to change my spending habits because I am spending money when I need to and only occasionally for when I really want something.

My Goals

One of my academic goals I have set for myself is to always strive to do my best in every class. I am not setting a certain GPA for myself because I think it limits a person's ability to see past that goal and work on always reaching their personal best. I know there will be plenty of days that I will feel like not trying my hardest, but I am going to try to over come that and work to achieve my goal. I plan on going to class regularly and studying hard to achieve this. I think it is very important to set academic goals for myself because it gives me a specific direction to follow in order to be successful in school.

A personal goal that I have set for myself throughout college is to try and really define who I am. I choose this goal because I think it is important for a person to define who they are so that they can feel confident with every part of themselves. I would like to walk away from this experience with a new perspective on myself and life. I think during college it is a period of self exploration and internal thought. To achieve this goal I have to do things that are out of my comfort zone and meet all kinds of different people. I am looking forward to new change and growing as a person.

A friendship goal that I have set for my goal is to make life long friends. I think throughout college is a time when you meet people you will truly care about and connect with. It is important to me to make these friendships because those are the people you will remember for the rest of your life, you will forever share the bonds and memories of some of the greatest times in your life. To achieve this goal I plan to put myself out there and be honest and open with others.
